Swollen Eyelids

Swelling a brief outlook:
Swelling is a condition in which a part of the body undergoes enlargement, because of the formation of an underlying lump. Swelling may occur in a body part due to a number of reasons, mainly in response to an injury, infection of disease or if the circulation of the fluids inside the body is not in a regulated manner. When swelling occurs due to retention of the fluids it is known as Edema. Commonly it is seen that swelling in body parts in general is not considered as a serious physical
problem, but still professional medical consultation should be sought as in some cases the reasons for swelling may prove serious & fatal.

Swelling of Eyelids:
The eyelid is a very delicate organ which protects our eyes from any external influences such as dust, heat, intense light, etc. The skin flap of the eyelids through its constant blinking process lubricates the eyeball, and also clears away the dust particles which accumulate in the nearby regions. The swelling of the eye balls may occur on account of a wide variety of reasons such as different types of allergies and other medical conditions. The most common symptoms are the swelling of the eye lids, reddening of the eye balls, itching and burning feelings etc.

Causes of eyelid swelling:
Blepharitis is one of the most common forms of eye swelling, in which the inflammation of the eyelids takes place recurrently which is being caused by the infection caused by a bacterium known as Staphylococcus bacteria. Conjunctivitis is another medical term which is used in this context. It is a contagious eye infection which may cause swelling, itching, burning or redness of the eye. The reasons for the occurrence of this disease may be varied starting from allergy, environmental irritants, contact lens products, eye drops & ointments etc. In some special cases it is observed that the disease may also spread by bacterial or viral infection. The disease is considered to be one of the most dreaded ones as it can spread from one person to the other at any given time. Chalazion is another type of eye lid swelling the symptom of which is a formation of a lump in the eyelids.

Cures and remedies:
In most of the cases of swelling of the eye lids professional medical attention is advised though there are a number a home remedies and preventive measures which can prove to be effective & helpful. For example in Blepharitis it is advised to keep the eyelids clean and free from crusts and application of warm compresses followed by a light scrubbing of the same with a cotton swab and a mixture of water and baby shampoo.
