Swollen Head Swollen head is an unusual enlargement of the head. This is faced by many people and is gradually becoming a menace.
Causative agents of swollen head
There are many causes for swollen head. Hydrocephalus is a reason that may lead to this kind of disease. Hydrocephalus mainly arises due to excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. Because of the accumulation of CSF the ventricles in the brain dilate and thus exert excessive pressure on the
brain tissues. Due to this the head appears to be enlarged. Increased intracranial pressure in the skull is another cause of swollen head. Another reason that may cause swollen head is the Paget's bone disease. In this kind of disease the bones in the skull get deformed or enlarged considerably. The Paget's bone disease could also affect different parts of the body too. Due to this the bones in the different parts of the body turn fragile and breakdown. This could further lead to arthritis and other bone related diseases. Congenital brain disorder play a major role in causing head enlargement. Recently it has been observed that gigantism could also lead to unusual enlargement of the head. Gigantism is a defect that occurs in childhood, which causes over growth of different body parts. Another such disease which causes excessive growth is acromegaly.
Remedies for swollen head
The best treatment for Hydrocephalus is surgical placement of shunt system in the brain. The shunt system diverts the excessive CSF that is accumulated in the brain to the different parts of the body. This combined with rehabilitation methods can help an individual to lead a normal life abiding to some limitations. Orthopedic assistance and aid can be given to those who are facing Paget's disease. The symptoms of this disease should be curtailed at the initial level itself. This helps to avoid huge risk. Medical aid in the form of tablets can be given for pain relief. Radiotherapy could be suggested to those suffering from gigantism. Surgical removal of pituitary tumor is could also help solve the problem of gigantism. Similar treatment could curtail the problem of acromegaly. Drugs such as Bromocriptine, Octreotide and pituitary hormone therapy could also be a good treatment for acromegaly. Detecting the disease at the initial level is the best treatment for any kind of disease.
