Swollen Throat GlandsIntroduction -
The glands in the throat, or on the sides of the neck (these are called lymph nodes), under the jaws, behind the ears swell when there is an injury or a cut near or anywhere around these glands, or due to a tumor or infection in neck, head or mouth. A mild injury or infection is within a few days and the swelling disappears too. It may take a longer time for recovery at times, when children have a swelling their throat
glands with the glands becoming hard and may remain that way for weeks before becoming normal.
Causes of the lump or swelling in the throat gland -
The most common causes are - growth in the thyroid gland or an enlarged thyroid gland (due to goiter or thyroiditis), overgrowth of fat cells (also called lipoma), allergy, cysts and problems with the salivary glands.
Most of the times, the growth in the thyroid gland (thyroid nodules) are minor ones, but only very few of them may turn to be cancer and may become a cause of concern. Cysts can be of different types - Sebaceous gland cyst, skin cyst (also called epidermal cyst), thyroglossal duct cyst (these are found near the wind pipe or the trachea) and branchial cleft cyst (this is found under the ear). Some of the problems with the salivary glands are the salivary stone, infection, inflammation of the salivary glands and tumor.
Treatment -
If the swelling disappears within a few days, they should not be a cause of much concern. But if the swelling remains for weeks, then it needs to be attended by a doctor. The treatment for swelling can be done at home with the following measures -
1. Avoiding, squeezing, scratching or pressing the lump or the swell in the throat. 2. Avoiding rubbing of the swell with proper clothing. 3. Avoiding draining or puncturing the lump or the swell as they can lead to bleeding and further infection. 4. Placing warm and wet cloth on the lump or swell several times in a day, if it becomes painful.
If even after these home remedies, the swelling and pain still persists for weeks, if the infection becomes worse, if there are any new symptoms and if the old and new symptoms are more frequent, it is advisable to visit a doctor.
