Swollen ToeSwelling in the toe due to a broken toe -
A break or a fracture in one of the bones following an injury due to fall or an accident may result in toe also being affected, resulting in pain and swelling in the toe nearest to that area. Bruising, bleeding, weakness, numbness, or tingling sensation in the toe are the other symptoms. Walking becomes very painful. If the bones in the toe are dislocated, then the toe may also look out of shape or deformed. A
fracture usually takes 3 to 6 weeks to heal. However, taking an x-ray would help, to keep track of the healing process. Using a cast shoe to place the affected toe in position enabling easier movement, and surgery in case of bad fracture are some of the solutions to this problem. Swelling can also be reduced by lifting the leg above the heart level, and lying down keeping the leg rose on pillows. Diseases involving swollen toe - Gout and pseudo gout are the two diseases which are characterized by red, swollen and tender toe as one of its symptoms.
Gout -
Gout is seen most commonly in men above 40 years of age with people with a family history of gout being at greater risk. At times, it is mistaken as pseudo gout.
An imbalance in the production of and excretion of uric acid (due to overproduction or problems in excretion) causes gout. The crystals of the acid accumulate in the joints causing inflammation. Elbow, knee, hand, feet, toes, ankles, shoulders and arms are affected too.
Sever pain and inflammation in the joints, tenderness of joints, fever, bumps on the skin, especially in the ear due to high levels of acid are the symptoms.
Pseudo gout -
It is similar to gout and a form of arthritis characterized by inflammation and attacks. In this disease, crystals accumulate in and around the joints, and only a single joint is affected. Mostly seen among the elderly, it is caused due to CPPD (Calcium Pyrophosphate Dehydrate) crystals depositing in the fluid in the joints. Attacks may be a result of infections following an injury or a surgery and may occur for several days. Those suffering from osteoarthritis or hyperparathyroidism are at a greater risk of suffering from pseudo gout. Red, tender, swollen joints and toes, fever are the symptoms. Shoulders, ankles and wrists are the other affected areas.
