Swollen TongueCommon causes of swelling:
A swollen may not be medically accepted as a disease but is considered as a symptom which may reflect a serious health problem or may be the outcome of other diseases within the body. Very commonly the witch boil a dental disease may give rise to the swelling of the tongue. Glossitis, another very common form of tongue swelling is caused by bacterial or viral infection or allergic reactions to certain toothpastes, mouth wash,
and breadth fresheners etc. The blue tongue disease which causes a change in the color of the tongue from normal pink to blue and rapid swelling is an arthropod borne viral spread of ruminants mainly includes sheep, cattle, goats & buffaloes etc.
Symptoms for the swelling:
Most of the tongue swelling shows the symptoms of soreness, enlargement, & irregularities in the shape & texture of the tongue. This may also be accompanied by pain, a hairy appearance, unusual color and smoothness, and formation of grooves or split in the affected region. Other symptoms include difficulty in the movement of the tongue and taste abnormalities. Sometimes the color of the tongue changes into black or brown along with the elongation of the hairy like structures present in upper most layer of the tongue known as the papillae. In other cases studies reveal that a swollen tongue may be the indication of the presence of Phlegm. Phlegm is predominant occurrences in the upper burner and it often exists with blood stasis especially in cases of older & aged patients.
Precautions & medical cures:
Precaution can be taken at home for prevention and cure of the swelling and other related problems. Maintaining a good oral hygiene may prove helpful in fighting of disorders such as blackening of the tongue and appearance of hairy like structures. In cases of swelling caused by allergic reactions antihistamines can be used under medical observation & guidance. Disorders caused due to the deficiency of certain elements such as vitamin B2 can be eliminated by including them in the diet. If the swelling is caused due to excessive intake of tobacco or alcohol which may possibly bring about a change in the color & texture of the affected areas in the tongue intake should be immediately cut off & immediate medical attention should be sought out.
