What is swollen neck?

The swelling in or around the neck causes the condition called swollen neck. All the parts in the body contain different types of glands. The swollen neck condition is due to enlargement of the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system which is again a part of immune system. The lymph nodes swell due to various reasons. The glands may swell because of
virus infections or some other injury. Swollen gland comes to normal condition if it is due to virus or other minor infection. Sometimes it may give rise to critical condition like cancer.

Causes of swollen neck

Some of the important common conditions are common cold and the viral infections and human being easily fall prey to all these factors. Swollen neck is also due to dental conditions which include tooth decay and gum disease. There are also some critical conditions which result in swollen neck. This includes malignancies such as lymphoma which is due to disorder in the immune system. it is also caused due to medication such as phenytoin and vaccinations for typhoid.

Treatment of swollen neck

Swollen neck is due to infection of lymph nodes .and very less attention is given by the people as they are inside the skin. But they can slowly develop into various diseases such as lymphoma which is the most dangerous type of cancer. So it is advisable to visit to a doctor if the swelling in the lymph node is not coming down within a week. Swelling neck left untreated can be dangerous as there can be some type of malignancies which is fatal. So immediate treatment is necessary according to the type of swelling.

Consequences of untreated swollen neck.

The untreated swelling in the neck may be having some type of malignancies which can be a threat to the health .so a proper screening of the swelling is important . Untreated swelling which may be due to Hodgkin's disease will be difficult to treat at the final stage and can be reason of death.
